Blue Morpho Butterfly Month Callaway Gardens

September, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center

Enjoy our month-long display of nature at its finest! Marvel at the Blue Morpho as hundreds of these tropical butterflies fill the Day Butterfly Center with their iridescent-blue splendor. If the trend continues, visitors to the Day Butterfly Center will witness the largest display of Blue Morpho Butterflies on the planet during September.

The Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) is a spectacular iridescent blue butterfly native to the rainforests of South and Central America. The undersides of the wings are brown with eyespots, but the contrasting upper sides could be considered the most brilliant, vivid blue that nature has to offer. This iridescent color actually results from microscopic scales on the back of their wings reflecting light, giving the brilliant shimmering blue appearance. As a Blue Morpho flies, its contrasting wing colors of brilliant blue and dull brown fool the eye and make the Morpho look as if it is appearing and disappearing, paying tribute to its name ‘morpho’ – which actually means “to change or modify.”

First Responders Day at King’s Pasture Christian Center

First Responders Day at King’s Pasture Christian Center September 11, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. What Is First Responders Day? First Responders Day is a day developed by King’s Pasture Christian Center located here in Hamilton, Georgia, where Archbishop Ken McNatt is the Senior Pastor, created to honor those who serve as First Responders along with their families. This year marks the 15th year Anniversary of the September 11th attacks. As we remember those who sacrificed we also want to thank those who serve this community every day.
First Responders Day will be recognized on Sunday, September 11th during our 10:30 A.M. worship service with a cook out to follow. We would like to invite all First Responders and their families to enjoy this special service with a meal to follow in their honor. There is no specific dress code for this service, but all First Responders are welcome to wear their uniforms so we can easily recognize and honor you for your service.

Red Cross Blood Drive

The Red Cross Blood Bank is the local depository for blood.  Most everyone knows that and takes it for granted.  If you, a family member, friend, or neighbor need blood for any reason, the Red Cross will provide it…right?  Yes…but.  That blood is only available for you or your family if people are willing to donate.  Summer always depletes the blood supply, so as we get into fall refilling the blood bank is an absolute necessity.
It’s imperative that we do our part, so to help fill that shortage of supply a Harris County Blood Drive is being planned.  On September 29, the Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at  in Cataula.  We need to begin signing up volunteers now.   If all goes well, this county-wide drive will be scheduled on a regular basis.  Please consider volunteering and tell others about the opportunity.
The blood drive will be held at Reformation Lutheran Church, 1045 US Highway 27 in Cataula Center.  If you would be interested in volunteering to donate blood, please contact Chuck or the Church for more information.
